With the results from our latest poll in, it's now time to show off the winning Archive Collections! If you weren't hungry before you read this, you will be after the fact!
Whenever a high-profile film is released, it is always certain that there will be a premiere to accompany it. For Johnny Thunder and the Wisdom of the Ancients, this was no exception, as nearly the entire cast and crew arrived to watch the finished film. However, for this special occasion, director Andrew Bermudez wanted to celebrate the occasion in a special way: a pre-show dinner with cuisines based on the film! While we don't have pictures of all of them, here are some of the highlights from that night's dinner.
First up is Rice Cake Stonehenge, which, as its name suggests, is a replica of Stonehenge made from rice cakes. It doesn't feature the entire monument, but rather the innermost monoliths. However, what is noteworthy is that, save the minifigures, their bases, the portal key, and the cardboard base, the entire thing is edible; the monoliths are made of Koala Crisp cereal held together with melted marshmallows and chocolate frosting and the grass is shredded coconut dyed with green food coloring. It's all attached to the cardboard with chocolate frosting.Next up is...uh...a jar of shelled peanuts. I don't have much about this, other then that this food is mainly based on the peanut gag from the film. That actually explains the design on the side of the jar. However, this food didn't catch on with the party-goers, so now we have a bag of leftover shelled peanuts stored away. Oh, well. It was worth a try.
What did catch on and prove to be the most popular dish of the night was Pippin's Jungle Juice Blend. As director Andrew Bermudez had spent a week in Florida back in June, he had tried out several specialty drinks served at the Orlando-area theme parks, such as Butterbeer and Vanilla South Pole Chill. Really liking the concept of specialty drinks, orders were given to concoct this special recipe for the party. It proved to be so popular, a second batch had to be made that night and the recipe was posted on the Mustache Maniacs Film Co. Press Room.
For dinner guests who wanted a healthy snack, a plate of fresh fruit with a distinct South American flair was set out for the guests to enjoy. Tropical Fruits, as it was called, featured an assortment of grapes, mango slices, pineapple chunks, and Mandarin Orange pieces (perhaps as a homage to Johnny Thunder and the Secret of Marco Polo). Why the tray has American flags in it is a mystery, though.
Next up is a naturally-popular dish: Tortilla Chips with Dove's Texan Salsa. Essentially, it's the party staple of chips and dip with a Johnny Thunder 3-themed name attached. In fact, the salsa was one of the few not home-made dishes: it's actually Newman's Own Mexican Salsa poured into a serving bowl.
One thing that was very home-made, though, was Achu's Peruvian Solterito Salad. It's not typical that you would see a salad without lettuce or cabbage, but this is an actual, 100% authentic, Peruvian salad filled with items like lima beans, olives, sliced tomatoes, and more. It wasn't the most popular item of the night, but it did bring a bit of Peru to the dinner table, as well as make up for Achu's brief cameo in the film.
If you were looking for a more traditional salad, then look no further than the Bran Castle Red Cabbage Salad. Just like the previous item, this salad is also 100% authentic, this time to Romanian cuisine. It's a salad coated in vinegar and...sugar? That's right. It's no reference to Lord Sinister's late mercenary leader, but the white specks on the inside of the bowl are actually specks of sugar that didn't make it into the salad. Perhaps that's why this salad proved to be a favorite of the night.
Unfortunately, we do not have any more photos of the food served that evening, which is a shame. There were some great food choices that couldn't make it in, including the Pamplonian Toast with Jamon (or anchovies) and Lance's Nona Meg's Lamb's Pie. For that last item, the long-winded name came as a request to patch up a factual error in the movie, as Lance calls shepherd's pie lamb's pie in the England sequence of the film. However, at the same time, who wants to see photos of the bottled water and coffee that you can buy anywhere?
Before you run off and eat, thank you for reading the latest Archive Collections! But don't stop now! We've got more coming soon!
